I always get nervous around this time of year as the top brands release their Colors of the Year. THANK GOODNESS Behr has started this color party off with a BANG with Cracked Pepper, followed by the NOT so bangable Sherwin Williams Persimmon (HGTV Home’s Color of the Year).

Colors of the Year should excite and inspire. They should be approachable and APPLICABLE to the average home on at least ONE paintable surface. Check, check, and…check.

So, let’s look closely at Cracked Pepper and see if it’s what color you’ve been looking for…

WHAT TYPE OF COLOR IS CRACKED PEPPER?

Cracked Pepper is a hybrid of sorts, sitting in between black and dark gray. You might even call Cracked Pepper a SOFT black paint color – not crisp, not sharp, but more muted and gentle while still giving an overall ‘blackish’ look.

If you have a room with a TON of natural light, sure, Cracked Pepper will grab a bit of that and look a bit softer and more like an uber-dark gray. However, toss this bad boy in a more moderate or lower light space, and you have a beautiful shade of soft black on your hands.

What’s the difference between Cracked Pepper and a REAL BLACK?

It all comes down to LRV…

WHAT IS CRACKED PEPPER’S LRV?

Cracked Pepper has an LRV of 8. LRV stands for ‘Light Reflectance Value,’ which helps you determine how light or dark a paint color is. And while an LRV of 8 puts Cracked Pepper DARN CLOSE  to the black range, it’s a few points shy. You might not notice this until you compare it to the other blacks like Sherwin Williams Tricorn Black (LRV 3) and Benjamin Moore Black 2132-10 (LRV 4.65). This difference in LRV separates the TRUE blacks from the SOFT black.

That’s right; Cracked Pepper is a soft black paint color as it’s not as dark or sharp as other popular shades of black.

WHAT UNDERTONES DOES CRACKED PEPPER HAVE?

To say that Cracked Pepper has violet-blue undertones would be a massive overstatement. In fact, in a world where colors with an LRV in this range tend to have noticeable undertones – Cracked Pepper is shockingly and impressively neutral (and it takes a lot to impress me).

I haven’t had any clients use Cracked Pepper, so I took one of their images and used BEHR’S visualizer to see how it looks – I LOVE IT. A little tweak to the toss cushions and this color will feel right at home.

Sure, toss Cracked Pepper on your home’s exterior with south-facing or afternoon western sunshine, and you might see a weee wink of violet pop up. However, on the average home, Cracked Pepper reads like a VERY (very) dark charcoal gray or a soft and subtle black.

WHAT WHITE TRIM COLOR GOES WITH CRACKED PEPPER?

Because of its striking depth and lack of obvious undertones, Cracked Pepper is reasonably flexible as to white paint colors.

• BEHR Ultra Pure White would be my first choice
• Sherwin Williams Pure White for a softer contrast
• BEHR Polar Bear, for some playful warmth

IS BLACK PEPPER A GOOD COLOR FOR THE EXTERIOR OF A HOME?

Black Pepper is as good on siding as it is on steak. Black Pepper’s depth makes it a gorgeous choice for exterior trim or a front door (as long as it suits the surrounding finishes). And if you’re a fan of the current ‘all-black exterior,’ Black Pepper should be in the running as it offers a slightly softer approach. In particular, notice how it contrasts with black windows (assuming you have them, if you’re going for the black-o-black look).

IS CRACKED PEPPER A GOOD COLOR FOR KITCHEN CABINETS OR ISLANDS?

While not every kitchen can pull off black cabinets, MANY kitchens are itching for a black-inspired island. Make sure the flecks (usually granite) or veining (quartz) in your countertop suit Cracked Pepper’s subtle, stormy backdrop. Some countertops need a slightly green undertone, in which case, Sherwin Williams Iron Ore could be a better choice.

HOW TO DECORATE YOUR HOME WITH CRACKED PEPPER

Because Cracked Pepper is so dramatic, you can overdo it quickly. If your walls or an accent wall are painted in Cracked Pepper, it’s good to have a few accent pieces (decor/toss cushions/etc.) that also pick up on that soft black.

Another way to tie in a dark shade like Cracked Pepper is to do black door or cabinet hardware or light fixtures with a black metal finish.

WHICH PAINT COLORS GO WITH CRACKED PEPPER?

You know I’m a Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore kinda gal – Sherm and Ben have been my boy toys for a long time. And while I do dabble in Behr and Farrow & Ball, I always revert back to my boys when I’m looking for my tried and true hues. This is why I’m referring to these brands and BEHR with the suggestions below…

BLOBS are just basic representations of the colors listed

• soft, warm grays with violet undertones
• moody, medium-depth, or darker grays with violet undertones
• medium-depth MUTED cinnamon-inspired shades, such as Benjamin Moore’s Giant Sequoia’
• some shades of taupe that lean more into gray than beige
• a gentle terra cotta-style hue such as BEHR’S Terra Cotta Urn
• green-grays like Sherwin William’s Evergreen Fog or the gentle look of BEHR Green Balsam or Incognito (mad love)

WHAT OTHER COLORS ARE SIMILAR TO CRACKED PEPPER?

1. BEHR ULTRA PURE WHITE

If you’re looking for a SUPER white – in fact, THE whitest paint color – this is your lucky day.

IS ULTRA-PURE WHITE A WARM OR COOL COLOR?

Ultra Pure White isn’t warm or cold – it’s bright white.

WHAT’S THE LRV OF ULTRA PURE WHITE?

With an LRV of 94, Pure White is about as white as you’re going to get and is EVEN WHITER than Sherwin Williams High Reflective White…which is pretty darned impressive in my books.

WHAT ARE ULTRA PURE WHITE’S UNDERTONES?

Because of its lack of commitment to ANY undertone, Ultra Pure White can pick up a bit of gray-blue from your northern exposure or high Kevin bulbs; it can also grab a bit of warmth via your southern exposure or low Kelvin bulbs.

2. BEHR SLEEK WHITE OR-W15

Is Sleek White as smooth as it sounds? Let’s take a look…

IS SLEEK WHITE A WARM OR COOL COLOR?

Sleek White could work for you if you’re looking for a warmer, brighter white.

WHAT’S THE LRV OF SLEEK WHITE?

Sleek White has a pretty darn high LRV of 92, making it a bright white, not a soft or true one (there are 5 types of white).

WHAT ARE SLEEK WHITE’S UNDERTONES?

Sleek White has a pretty noticeable yellow undertone. Does this make me nervous? Heck yes. This degree of yellow could show up in a bad way, especially against a cleaner, softer, or more TRUE white.

However, some homes are just begging for a bright, warm white – especially those with cool northern exposure, so don’t let the crazy lil’ Ginger sway you too much.

WHAT COLORS ARE SIMILAR TO SLEEK WHITE?

• Benjamin Moore Simply White, which is more neutral/less yellow than Sleek White
• Sherwin Williams Whitetail, which is slightly more muted and grounded

The 3 White Paint Colours I Would NEVER Paint My Trim or Cabinets

3. BEHR SWISS COFFEE 12

Swiss Coffee has been kickin’ it for a LONG time as one of Behr’s most popular white paint colors. In fact, I’ve worked with it DOZENS of times with my Online Colour Consulting clients when they want me to work with their ‘existing Behr Swiss Coffee trim.’

IS SWISS COFFEE A WARM OR COOL PAINT COLOR?

Swiss Coffee is a lovely, warm shade of white. Is it warmer than the AVERAGE popular warm white? Yes, but this is what made it so popular in the late 90s and early 200os, as this extra warmth suited the type of finishes (Tuscan) being installed.

WHAT’S THE LRV OF SWISS COFFEE?

With an LRV of 84, Swiss Coffe is considered ‘soft, warm white‘ as it won’t necessarily ACT like white if there are brighter whites in the space. However, let it be THE white in your home and its soft pretty warmth will do the job.

WHAT ARE SWISS COFFEE’S UNDERTONES?

There’s no foolin’ around – Swiss Coffee has a legit yellow hue, with a touch of orange for balance (so it’s not a yellow-green undertone). All of this combined makes Swiss Coffee softer, darker, and more muted than Sleek White and Ultra Pure White.

4. BEHR SPUN COTTON YL-W09

When it comes to whites like Spun Cotton, I start getting twitchy(er) – let’s find out why.

IS SPUN COTTON A WARM OR COOL WHITE?

Spun Cotton is definitely a warm white paint color via its lovely undertones, which we’ll look at shortly!

WHAT’S THE LRV OF SPUN COTTON?

Spun Cotton has an LRV Of 89. This makes it on the edge of soft white, BORDERING on the bright white range.

WHAT ARE SPUN COTTON’S UNDERTONES?

Spun Cotton has a high degree of yellow, making it darn hard to decide if it’s a ‘bright white’ or ‘super bright and light yellow.’ This amount of yellow undertones would stop me from putting it in MOST kitchens and on most trims – it’s just not flexible enough.

WHAT COLORS ARE SIMILAR TO SPUN COTTON?

• If you want a bright white with yellow, I will lean more toward BEHR’S Sleek White or Benjamin Moore Simply White.
• Sherwin Williams Whitetail is comparable but a bit more muted than Spun Cotton.

Sadly, BEHR hasn’t signed up with Samplize PEEL & STICK yet, but I sure hope they do.

5. BEHR WHITE 52

Isn’t white just WHITE? Hardly…

IS BEHR’S WHITE 52 A WARM OR COOL SHADE OF WHITE?

White 52 might do the trick for a muted, slightly cool-toned white. But just because it SAYS white doesn’t mean it IS white. Let’s dive in a little deeper…

WHAT’S WHITE 52’S LRV?

With a surprisingly low LRV of 83, White is a soft white getting a bit close to the off-white range. Want to know what that range IS? Read about it HERE.

WHAT ARE WHITE 52’S UNDERTONES?

White has a slightly violet-gray undertone. This undertone makes White 52 pretty fussy when coordinating other colors with it. It won’t like any warm colors or those with green undertones.

If you partner White 52 with a REAL white (i.e., Ultra Pure White), you’ll see its depth/undertones a bit more. However, if you paint your walls and trim White 52, it will act a bit more like white.

WHAT COLORS ARE SIMILAR TO BEHR’S WHITE 52?

• Similar to Benjamin Moore Decorators White, which has a slightly cool, slightly gray cast.

6. BEHR PALAIS WHITE GR W15

Last but not least, Palais White! Let’s see what this shade of white has up its sleeves…

IS PALAIS WHITE A WARM OR COOL COLOR?

Palais White is a considerably WARM shade of white. Does this particular warmth make me a bit nervous? Yes, particularly on kitchen cabinets. However, some finishes demand this extra warmth, so sample it carefully!

WHAT’S THE LRV OF PALAIS WHITE?

With an LRV of 87, Palais White is getting up there for sure, kind of in-between legit WHITE and a softer white. And it has a pretty passive warmth to it.

WHAT ARE THE UNDERTONES OF PALAIS WHITE?

Palais White certainly has a yellow undertone, but it’s a very gentle, pretty color with a slightly orange-pink backdrop to it.

WHAT COLORS ARE SIMILAR TO PALAIS WHITE?

• Palais White is like a lighter version of BEHR’S Swiss Coffee with similar warmth.
• Sherwin Williams White Flour is similar in that it has a yellow but almost slightly pinkish hue.
• Of all of BEHR’S gorgeous whites, it’s the closest to my FAVORITE WHITE EVER – Benjamin Moore White Dove.

PEOPLE ALSO ASK…

WHAT IS BEHR’S WHITEST WHITE?

Without a doubt, Behr’s brightest white is Ultra Pure White. With its LRV of 94, it’s a popular choice for trims, cabinets, and walls.

IS BEHR SIMPLY WHITE THE SAME AS BENJAMIN MOORE SIMPLY WHITE?

Heck no. While they might have the same name, BEHR’S Simply White is coming in HOT with a considerably stronger yellow-orange undertone when compared to Benjamin Moore’s Simply White. BEHR’S version is also a touch darker, with its slightly lower LRV of 87.8 (Simply White is 89.52).

IS BEHR POLAR BEAR A WARM WHITE?

Polar Bear didn’t make the TOP 6, but it’s a beautiful option if you want a white with an almost pinkish-peach undertone. This makes Polar Bear a warm white, and its LRV of 90 makes it a BRIGHT one.

WHAT ARE BEHR’S VERSIONS OF SHERWIN WILLIAMS ALABASTER & PURE WHITE?

BEHR’S Snowy Pine is reasonably close to Sherwin Williams Alabaster. As for Pure White, I suppose BEHR’S Gallery White or Melting Icicles, but they’re not close enough, and they ain’t got NOTHIN’ on Pure White – I don’t trust their undertones as much.

WHAT ARE BEHR’S VERSIONS OF BENJAMIN MOORE WHITE DOVE & CHANTILLY LACE?

BEHR doesn’t have a white that’s as soft and subtle as White Dove. The closest would be Palais White, but it’s really not that ‘similar.’ BEHR’S Ultra Pure White is similar to Chantilly Lace; it’s just a touch whiter and brighter.

1. BEHR DOLPHIN FIN 790C-3

If you’re eyeing Dolphin Fin for your next project, I have the details you need…

IS DOLPHIN FIN A WARM OR COOL GRAY?

Dolphin Fin is a slightly warm gray – not TRADITIONALLY warm in that it looks greige, but it sure as heck isn’t cool-toned. It’s what I call a ‘stormy gray.’

WHAT’S DOLPHIN FIN’S LRV?

With an LRV of 59, Dolphin Fin is a light depth gray but is a slightly heavier light shade of gray, not a bright, fresh one.

If you have a dark room, this depth could be a bit heavy looking; you might consider a gray with a higher LRV. However, if your room gets moderate light, it could settle in quite nicely.

WHAT ARE DOLPHIN FIN’S UNDERTONES?

EVERY gray will have cool undertones. While Dolphin Fin is no exception, its undertones are quite passive and similar to those of Sherwin Williams Repose Gray, another popular warm gray paint colour. Of the three undertones, Dolphin Fin is slightly more inclined toward green.

WHAT PAINT COLORS ARE SIMILAR TO BEHR DOLPHIN FIN?

• Sherwin Williams On the Rocks, but OTR has a wink more purple undertone
• VERY similar to Sherwin Williams Repose Gray, but it’s a bit softer
• For a TOUCH more purple/taupe, check out Behr Chic Gray PPU26-10

2. BEHR SILVER DROP 790C-2

If you’re looking for a lighter shade of gray, Silver Drop could be just the color for you…

IS SILVER DROP A WARM OR COOL GRAY – OR IS IT GREIGE?

Silver Drop is definitely a warm gray that winks politely at the greige end of things via its warm backdrop.

WHAT’S THE LRV OF SILVER DROP?

Silver Drop offers a LIGHTER approach to gray. With an LRV of 69, it’s a light gray – not washed-out but doesn’t have NEARLY as much body as Dolphin Fin.

WHAT ARE SILVER DROP’S UNDERTONES?

You might find that Silver Drop is one of the colour ninjas – grays that can and WILL pick up any of the 3 cool undertones with only a little encouragement, even though it DOES mildly favor green. The look of this colour can easily be influenced by the room’s exposure, interior finishes, and EVEN personal perception!

WHAT COLORS ARE SIMILAR TO SILVER DROP?

• Silver Drop is slightly warm but not as warm as Sherwin Williams Drift of Mist.
• Benjamin Moore Titanium, but Titanium is a wink more fresh and green.
• Silver Drop is similar to Sherwin Williams Crushed Ice, but Silver Drop grabs a touch more green undertone.

3. BEHR MISTY COAST PPU25-13

Misty Coast is one well-named color – let’s find out why…

IS MISTY COAST A WARM OR COOL GRAY?

Misty Coast is one of my favourite gray Behr paint colors. It’s cool, but not ICY cold, more of a subtle stormy look – one MIGHT even call it misty.

WHAT IS MISTY COAST’S LRV?

Misty Coast has an LRV of 68. This puts this stormy shade of gray in the mid to high end of the LIGHT range. While it might not have the right energy for a low-light room, at least its higher LRV helps out. For this reason, Misty Coast is best suited to a room with average+ natural light.

WHAT ARE MISTY COAST’S UNDERTONES?

Misty Coast comes out with a soft, subtle blue undertone that can SOMETIMES sway blue-green…but barely.

Misty Coast has an LRV of 68, which is tucked nicely in the light range. However, if you ask me, it LOOKS like it should have a slightly lower LRV, but I thought could be just because of the storminess of it.

WHAT COLORS ARE SIMILAR TO MISTY COAST?

• Kind of in-between Benjamin Moore Wickham Gray and Stonington Gray. Stonington has more depth, whereas Wickham looks a touch fresher and lighter, although the LRVs are virtually the same.

4. BEHR SILVER CITY MQ2-59

Silver City is a gray paint color with a bit more meat on its bones. Let’s see what this bad boy’s all about…

IS SILVER CITY A WARM OR COOL GRAY?

Silver City isn’t terribly warm or cool, making it more of a stormy gray. This means that if you have a north-facing room, it could look a bit cooler than expected. However, if your room has southern exposure or afternoon western sunshine, Silver City could look a ‘bit’ warm.

WHAT’S THE LRV OF SILVER CITY?

Silver City is slightly darker than the average shade of gray (used for walls), with an LRV of 57. Still in the light range, but it’s a HEAVY light, so it might not be the best for a dark room.

WHAT ARE SILVER CITY’S UNDERTONES?

Regarding undertones, this bad boy EASILY swings between a very subtle green or violet (it’s one of the gray ninjas, for sure). The less committed a color is to an undertone, the more EASILY SWAYED it is by exposure, interior finishes, and personal perception.

BEHR’s Best White & Soft Off-White Paint Colors

WHAT COLORS ARE SIMILAR TO SILVER CITY?

• Sherwin Williams Knitting Needles is close but DOES cater to violet, helping you see Silver City’s tendency to grab a tiny touch of green.
• Similar to Sherwin Williams Silverplate, but not QUITE as stormy/muted and slightly less undertone.

Sterling sets itself apart from the previous shades of gray – let’s find out why…

IS STERLING A WARM OR COOL GRAY

Unlike the previous grays that are stormy and warm, Sterling is a COOOOL gray. A color like this can balance the warmth of a south-facing room nicely but could be a wink cold for a north-facing room.

WHAT’S THE LRV OF STERLING?

With an LRV of 65, Sterling is tucked quite nicely in the light range, not too heavy, and not washed out.

WHAT ARE STERLING’S UNDERTONES?

Sterling is soft and fresh with its soft blue-purple undertone. This undertone makes Sterling an interesting choice with crisp white trim and even some marble surfaces.

WHAT COLORS ARE SIMILAR TO STERLING?

• Sherwin Williams Reflections, but Reflections is LIGHTER, a touch brighter, and just a wink more purple.
• If you want to take things a WINK cooler, check out Behr Gray Shimmer, which has an LRV of 69.

IS EON A WARM OR COOL GRAY?

Eon is a beautiful, muted, calming, WARM gray paint color. However, its warmth isn’t overwhelming; it’s only a polite nod.

WHAT’S THE LRV OF EON?

Eon has an LRV of 65, making it a great, moderately light paint color – darn close to my magical LRV number for almost any room!

WHAT ARE EON’S UNDERTONES?

Eon has a soft, pretty green undertone…and it’s not that subtle about it, either.

WHAT COLORS ARE SIMILAR TO EON?

• Benjamin Moore Moonshine is similar but more likely to lean blue than Eon.
• Benjamin Moore’s Titanium comes across a TOUCH warmer and slightly less green than Eon.

WHAT’S THE BEHR VERSION OF SHERWIN WILLIAMS AGREEABLE GRAY?

BEHR’S Toasty Gray N320-2 is definitely comparable to Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray. While NO colors will be the same, there will always be shifts in either LRV, undertones, or temperature (or all three); these two colors are definitely similar.

If you’ve never heard of Agreeable Gray, it’s one of the most POPULAR neutral paint colors right now, followed closely by Benjamin Moore Edgecomb Gray.
