THE SERIES: PART 3 of 3

Are you trying to figure out the best paint colour palette for your new baby’s nursery? Are you patiently (or impatiently) waiting for the big day to meet your new lil nugget? Then you’ll love this article!

I’ve created THREE Easy Steps to help you make a colour palette that is gender-neutral enough to suit a boy or a girl – or both/neither if that’s the case!

STEP 1  CHOOSE YOUR MAIN WALL COLOUR

Naturally, the best place to start is to choose your main wall colour, HOWEVER, I do recommend choosing the colour of your main furniture pieces before you dive too deep.

There’s NO SHORTAGE of gorgeous paint colours for a gender-neutral playroom or nursery, just keep in mind that off-white neutral paint colours can make for great base colours, making it easier to add a wide range of accent colours!

BENJAMIN MOORE GRAY OWL OC-52

BENJAMIN MOORE PINK BLISS 2093-70

Pink Bliss is a gentle soft pink that commits to colour without being REMOTELY overwhelming.

Edgecomb Gray is a GORGEOUS greige that’s well-balanced between gray and beige. You can even light it by 25% or 50% for a softer approach.

BENJAMIN MOORE GRAY CASHMERE 2138-60

Gray Cashmere is a soft light blend of gray, blue and green. Whereas the dominant colour in Gray Owl is gray, you’ll find that the gray in this colour takes a bit of a backseat, as the blue and green shift depending on the exposure of the room.

BENJAMIN MOORE CHELSEA GRAY HC-168

Feeling brave? Chelsea Gray is a beautiful, medium-toned charcoal that grounds a room, whether it’s a feature wall or on EVERY wall.

BENJAMIN MOORE WHITE DOVE OC-17

White Dove is a beautiful, soft, warm white that’s a great option for north or south-facing rooms (or east/west).

SHERWIN WILLIAMS BIG CHILL SW 7648

When it comes to light, cool gray paint colours, Big Chill is an awesome choice. If you want a bit more depth/undertone, you can also look at Benjamin Moore Stonington Gray.

BENJAMIN MOORE FEATHERBED 928

Featherbed is a gorgeous, slightly stronger yellow paint colour, which can be great if you have north or east-facing light as the yellow will hold itself a bit better compared to the softer cream range.

SIMILAR COLOURS TO CHECK OUT: Sherwin Williams Creamy, Benjamin Moore White Down (these are MUCH more muted creams)

BENJAMIN MOORE BALBOA MIST OC-27

Balboa Mist is a beautiful, soft warm gray with a gentle violet undertone.

STEP 2  CHOOSE YOUR MAIN NEUTRAL ACCENT COLOURS

Your neutral accent colours might come naturally to your room via the furniture you choose, so be sure to keep this in mind!

TIP 1

Don’t take these accent colours too literally (which is why there aren’t names next to them). These are just jumping-off points for you to take inspiration from!

TIP 2

While you can choose more than three, I wouldn’t choose three DIFFERENT colours. I would only add variation using one colour in different DEPTHS (otherwise it can get pretty busy).

TIP 3

Not all of the above neutrals will suit ALL of the STEP 1 colours, as it greatly depends on which wall colour you choose. Generally speaking, black, gray and white will go with ANY of the colours in STEP 1, it’s the brown/cream/tan that can be a bit trickier to integrate.

TIP 4

You don’t HAVE to choose a neutral accent colour (although white is usually necessary). If you favour a more colourful approach, move on to STEP 3!

STEP 3  CHOOSE YOUR MAIN FUN ACCENT ‘COLOURS’

While I love a good neutral palette, there’s nothing like a splash of colour to add personality to a room! And while there are MANY MORE wild and wonderful colours than what I’ve shown below (ie: teal and orange), these should get you started!

• If you’ve chosen ONE OR TWO neutrals from STEP 2, choose one, two or three colours.

• If you’ve chosen THREE neutrals from STEP 2, choose only one or two ‘colours’. Of course, there might be secondary accent colours in smaller pieces/patterns, but it’s about them being in the backdrop and not obvious parts of the palette.

A few other things to think about when creating your palette…

• North-facing rooms that are low-light don’t handle cooler, heavier colours as well.

• South-facing rooms can benefit from cool-toned paint colours.

• Does your room have east or west-facing light? READ THIS

• Size matters! Pay attention to the depth of your paint colour to make sure it suits your room.

Before, the yellow was a bit too strong for this soon-to-be nursery…

Whenever I have clients with kids, there’s often a struggle between what the kid wants and what the parent wants. The kids often gravitate towards colors in the ‘primary’ – aka ‘visual punch in the face’ range (blue/red/yellow), whereas parents often lean towards the softer more subtle versions of these colors. And of course, there’s the odd brave parent who lets their kids pick their own colors – bless their hearts. NOT THIS MOMMA!  I am WAY too much of a control freak for that.

So what do you do when you and baby-boo are at odds over paint colors? You read this…

Tips for choosing paint colors with your kids for their bedroom…

1. Don’t let them pick the color they want 

• Ask them to tell you TWO different colors that they would like on their walls – ie: blue, green  

• Go to the paint store (by yourself) and pick up 3-4 different versions of these colors that you can live with. Now don’t go all boring and earthy – stretch your comfort zone a bit and look for colors that bridge the gap between their need for bright and your personal tastes.

• Show them the 3-4 color chips that you’ve pre-approved and let them pick the one they want and really…let them pick it. You may have a fave, but you’ve already narrowed it down to what you can live with so leave the rest up to them.

2. If honey boo-boo insists on a dark or wild color then choose a SINGLE WALL for that color to go on 

• Tell them that three of the walls will remain white/cream/gray and they can put WHATEVER color they want on their one feature wall (usually the wall that the bed is on). When they get bored of this color (which they will) it’s an easy change.

3. Install a chair rail 

Choose a neutral/off white/gray for the top portion of the walls and let them choose the color for the bottom (either their own choice or one of the ones you’ve narrowed down for them). This works for a few reasons…

• When they inevitably get bored with this month’s favourite color you won’t even need a ladder to change it up. All it will take is a gallon of paint, a bottle of wine, and an afternoon.

• If lil Johnny chooses Fire Engine Red as his most fave color or sweet Petunia wants a black feature wall, it won’t feel like you get punched in the face with color every time you walk in the room as the color will essentially be only on 1/3 of the wall space.

• You don’t EVER have to change the top color. If you choose a color that is neutral/off white/white then all you ever have to change is the bottom.

I don’t have photos of each of these colors in KID’S room’s colors, but you’ll still find the info you need, along with other photos for general reference. 

The Best Benjamin Moore Paint Colors for KID’S Rooms

1. BENJAMIN MOORE STONINGTON GRAY

Stonington Gray is an awesome light gray with subtle undertones. It’s a great color for a south-facing room or a well-lit NORTH-facing room, but you may want to go a touch lighter if you have a room with low light.

BTW, in the above photo, Stonington Gray looks CONSIDERABLY warmer than it usually does; the color by the orange drape is the truest.

2. SHERWIN WILLIAMS SEA SALT OR RAINWASHED

If you love the look of green or blue-green, Sea Salt or Rainwashed are GORGEOUS options. Just be sure to read their full color reviews (especially Sea Salt) as it can be a ninja!

3. BENJAMIN MOORE LILY LAVENDER

If you’re looking for a violet that both you and your child can live with, one that isn’t too punchy nor too passive, Lily Lavender might just hit the spot!

4. BENJAMIN MOORE NEWBURYPORT BLUE OR HALE NAVY

If you’re looking for a striking navy blue that isn’t TOO heavy, Newburyport Blue is a STUNNER. It’s a classic navy blue look without the visual weight of Benjamin Moore Hale Navy, which is equally as stunning.

If you’re looking for a gray with a bit more meat on its bones, look no further than Chelsea Gray. This is a SOLID charcoal gray paint color, and while you wouldn’t know it, it’s even slightly warm. It also has a slight green undertone that doesn’t always show up to the party. A color like this also makes for an AWESOME feature wall!

With its soft green-gray backdrop, Colorado Blue is my GO-TO blue for a kid’s room.  Sitting right in the middle of dark and light, this blue adds personality to a room without being punchy or overbearing.

• What is the room’s exposure? North facing rooms often suit warmer colors, whereas south-facing rooms love the cooler end of things. Have an east or west-facing room? read THIS

• Is the room dark, does it have good natural and/or artificial lighting? This can play a big part in choosing the best paint color!

• What color is the carpet? Make sure that the undertones of your carpet jive with the undertones of your wall color.

Are you looking for a paint colour that both you and your child love? Or maybe your wee one isn’t even BORN yet and you want to create a welcoming space for their arrival. Whatever your situation, I’ve got some great colours for you.

Now, to be TOTALLY honest, I struggled with this blog post. Why? Because I know that there should be no ‘masculine or feminine colours’; that boys can love pink and girls can love blue and so on and so forth. BUT, for the sake of Google search and reaching those who are looking for a certain RANGE of colours, there are definitely ‘keywords’ that are traditionally applied to many of these colours.

What I’m trying to say is that OF COURSE, you can put these colours in ANY kid’s room, I’m just trying to make this blog post ‘Google search’ friendly so that those who WANT these colours for ANY reason can find them! Does that even make sense? Long story short, my heart is in a good place.

Tips for choosing paint colours with your kids for their bedroom…

TIP 1    DON’T LET THEM PICK ANY COLOUR THEY WANT

When they get bored of this colour (which they will) it’s an easy change. Consider Cloud White or a soft subtle gray as your main/neutral colour.

TIP 3  INSTALL A CHAIR RAIL

A chair rail is basically a piece of trim, usually 3-5″ tall (1/2″ thick) that is placed horizontally around the room at approx 36″ from the floor. Choose a neutral/off white/light gray for the top of the walls and let your wee one choose the colour for the bottom (either their own choice or one of the ones you’ve narrowed down for them). This works for a few reasons….

• When they inevitably get bored with that months’ favourite colour you won’t even need a ladder to change it up. All it will take is a gallon of paint, a bottle of wine and an afternoon.

While this might SEEM like the non-exciting part, this is where things really start popping. With the introduction of a neutral or ‘foundation’ colour, your other accent colours (STEP 3) will come to LIFE!

• These are just some general colour ideas, don’t take them TOO literally. You can tweak them to feel more vintage, lively or earth-toned – whatever suits your kids the best!

• For accent colours to be effective they need to be seen THREE times in a room. Ideally, you’ll be able to draw a triangle between the three so that your eye will carry the colour throughout the space.

Before Pinterest, people didn’t pay as much attention to the colour palettes in their kid’s bedrooms. Whatever colour the wall happened to BE was how it stayed until the kids moved out 18 years later.

However, thanks to the online world, our eyes have been opened up as to how kids rooms can not only be fabulous spaces for kids to be in, they can ALSO be integrated into the style of the entire home!

BTW, I know this blog post is old-fashioned in saying that these colours are for boys/him/he, as they’re well-suited for girls/she/her/them/they. This is an OLD blog post that I’ve tried to update and edit, but Google doesn’t like it if I change main titles/links so I have to be careful. This palette is a bit more high contrast than the above two. This bedroom is fresh, fun and timeless with the light gray walls and navy blue and red accents – LOOOVE it.

Girls Bedroom Remodel for Under $650

Believe it or not, I finally let go of my control freak tendencies and ACTUALLY let my daughter pick the colour for her bedroom.

Just joking, I didn’t. I asked her what ‘colour’ she liked and she said ‘blue’ and I said ‘alright then – blue it is’ and I picked a blue that I knew she would like, but more importantly – a blue that I could live with…because it’s all about me.

I set myself a pretty strict budget with her room. Just joking, I didn’t. However, I have to admit that I even impressed myself with some of my uber-affordable purchases via Target (pronounced with a soft ‘g’ and silent ‘t’ at the end for those in the know) and a few other local haunts.

The previous owners had used this room as a den. And while the tan suited their style perfectly, we were ready for some moody blues!

I cannot even TELL you how awesome the look on her face was when she saw it. It took me 2 days to completely paint it and redecorate it and I didn’t let her in that entire time.

I chose Icy Moon Drops by Benjamin Moore which is THEEEE perfect soft blue colour with just a weeee dab of green in it which stops it from becoming ‘icy’. And it was actually Cassie who chose coral as her accent colour and I threw some hot pink in there just because a few of her old things were that colour and it saved me some moola.

Along with ‘blue’, another thing she mentioned was a mild obsession with horses and weiner dogs. And while I wasn’t about to paint hoof prints on her walls or hang wieners from the ceilings, I was able to find some artwork and accessories to support this temporary fetish. This makes things affordable to change in the future when she loves push-up bras and Justin Bieber (which will hopefully never happen).

There’s lots of room here for treasures and knick-knacks, including pens, necklaces, books and crayons thanks to this organizing rod with containers and basket (which will be chatted about more in an upcoming post)

A place for everything and everything has its place…

I’m not a huge fan of artwork, posters and random crap barfing all over my freshly painted walls. By creating this homemade bulletin board (well not COMPLETELY homemade – I bought the corkboard and bedazzled the heck out of it with fabric, ribbon and paint) I was able to satisfy my need for order and her need to display her paper treasures!

THE GRAND TOTAL…

For $150 I got the following from Target:

• 2 gorgeous lamps
• A comforter with 2 shams
• Body pillow and coordinating pillow cover
• Accent cushions
• Drapes
• Desk Chair

AND WHO SAYS TARGET ISN’T AWESOME?! 

The rest of the items added up to $450:

• Dbl bed frame/side table/desk : 2nd hand
• Paint to refurbish furniture : Home Depot
• Rolling book cart : Ikea
• White dresser : My garage
• Long bookshelf : 2nd hand
• Various frames : Misc stores
• Accessories : Home Sense
• Horse Artwork : Quilted Duck
• Handmade bulletin board : Misc stores
• Trunk for stuffed animals : My garage
• Paint and supplies : Home Depot
• Throw blanket : Thrift

This means that I ended up decorating her room INCLUDING FURNITURE for under $650!  This is where I high-five myself.

So I’ve got one happy camper around this house – and it’s Maggie’s room next so stay tuned!
