REAL HOMES, REAL PEOPLE, REAL COLORS!

When choosing my top colors for the year, I’m looking for colors that INSPIRE. Colors that talk to people (mind you, every color talks to me after a few glasses of wine). Colors that have you thinking, ‘You know what? Maybe I’ll step outside my comfort zone and try it – why not!’ And while some colors are only good on a new car or fresh pair of undies (Caliente, anyone?), others are just begging to be slapped on your walls, cabinets, and doors – colors like the ones we’re looking at shortly.

But first…

WHAT’S KYLIE M’S PROCESS FOR CHOOSING HER FAVE COLORS?

First off, it’s agonizing – I can’t even tell you. Colors are like my children, and I love them all the same for different reasons. Just joking – I DEFINITELY play favorites.

Here’s the general process…

1. Choose this month’s fave wine and insert funnel and straw.

2. Break down each color group, i.e., blue, green, beige-tan, gray, white, etc…

3. Focusing on one group at a time, I consider colors my clients have asked for in the previous months and how these relate to where trends could be SHIFTING.

4. Narrow it down to my favorite three colors within each color group, and from there…

5. Consider each color’s useability on the following surfaces…

  • cabinets, islands, and/or bathroom vanities
  • accent walls
  • entire rooms or even WHOLE HOMES
  • trims
  • doors (interior and exterior)
  • exterior siding

6. Consider any shifts I’m seeing on my Instagram feed

From there, I don’t just pick the colors with the most checked boxes; I combine these with my knowledge of WHAT PEOPLE TEND TO LIKE.

Why does this matter?

Because most people buying paint are average people with average homes…

REAL PEOPLE & REAL HOMES NEED REAL COLORS.

Sure, we’ve got a few billionaires here and there or the eccentrics who crave the wild and wonderful, but in the residential paint world…

Most of us are just looking for pretty colors that get us excited to paint.

This is why I still stand by my previous year’s faves, including Sherwin Williams Aesthetic White, Ripe Olive, and Benjamin Moore Edgecomb Gray.

Why?

Because these colors are still kickin’ it, you guys still love them, and I could EASILY choose them for this year, too! But that would be a bit redundant. The point is that these colors WORK, inspire, and are useable.

Sherwin Williams Alabaster with Evergreen Fog green accent wall in shiplap, gold brass hardware, black gray hexagon tile floor, white vanity, marble look quartz

Sherwin William’s 2023 Coty, Evergreen Fog, is still a super popular shade of green

ARE THESE COLORS NEW & EXCITING?

You might expect my colors of the year to vary wildly from year to year. Look at Benjamin Moore – last year’s color was Raspberry Blush; this year’s color is a ravishing shade of violet-blue. As for Sherwin Williams’s 2023 choice, Old Bologna, I mean, Redend Point, is DRASTICALLY different from this year’s subtle shade of blue – Upward.

Unlike the big brands, I’m not looking at high design, commercial spaces, or fashion when looking for my color inspirations – I’m looking at YOUR HOME AND YOUR TASTES. I explore current trends and consider how they’re shifting to see where things are going in the coming year (again, based on my Instagram feed and Online Consulting clients). This means that this year’s colors are often a variation or tweak of LAST year’s colors.

Why?

While trends can SHIFT, it takes a lot for a ‘wild and wonderful new color’ to come on the scene without SOME kind of warning or warm-up. So, while I’d love to throw down some wild color that gets people talking, I’d rather just show you what I believe you’ll be looking for…

Colors that have a darn good chance of looking good SOMEWHERE in or on your home.

My favorite choice for last year was Sherwin Williams Aesthetic White. And throughout 2023, I was happy to see it pop up on my client’s exteriors, cabinets, and walls!

While it’s not wild and crazy, it sure as heck is popular!

By the way, I talk this much in real life, too.

NOW LET’S GET THIS PARTY STARTED!

Colors of the year 2024, BEnjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams, Kylie M Interiors online paint color consulting

BENJAMIN MOORE MARITIME WHITE

Not everyone is ready for the warmer end of beige (myself included), but many are tired or gray, greige, and taupe. PERSONALLY, it’s about the right color, in the right depth, in the right spot. However, with trends continually leaning warmer (in the neutral world), and slowly shifting OUT of the ‘white on white’ trend, Maritime White was one of the first colors to come to mind.

Maritime White walls, White Dove cabinets, Antique Pewter lowers

Contrary to what its name says, Maritime White isn’t white. Nor is it super beige or cream – it’s a hybrid of sorts. While it might cater a bit more to beige than anything, it’s definitely not typical for those who think they’re averse to beige, as it has a touch of gray to slow it down.

What’s great about a color like Maritime White is its lack of commitment, which makes it flexible and ready to suit a wide and wild range of interior finishes. Maritime White is FLEXIBLE, it’s WARM, and it’s ready for you (sounds like a hot date, right?)

Why Maritime White?

More and more, my Online Color clients are leaning into their homes…

They’re picking paint colors based on the home they have, not the home they WISH they had.

For this reason, we’re seeing more subtle warm hues pop up, colors like Maritime White. They’ve become popular for those updating their 1990s and 2000s homes, as well as homes from earlier decades.

Benjamin Moore Maritime White bathroom and bedroom, travertine tile, Sherwin Urbane Bronze feature accent wall. Kylie M (2)

While I’d love to see this WHOLE room in Maritime White, the Urbane Bronze accent wall is pretty!

Homeowners aren’t fighting their homes as much (and I hope I’ve been part of that shift) – trying to get white cabinets where white doesn’t fit or gray walls where beige will be better. Sure, there’s no harm in trying – there’s often a happy medium…

But sometimes there’s something even better…the perfect color.

As mentioned above, I’ve noticed a decreased demand for white walls. This trend is slowly being replaced by softer, warmer hues – colors like Maritime White. Will we reach the heavier end of the beige world next year? We’ll have to see – give me 12 months to think about it.

The Best Off-White Paint Colors

WHERE DOES MARITIME WHITE LOOK BEST?

  • Unlike more colorful options, a neutral like Maritime White can suit an entire home (these colors do, too).
  • Single rooms, as it accommodates various other colors in a palette.
  • Exterior siding, often suiting stone and brickwork.
  • Kitchen cabinets, especially given the off-white/light depth cabinet trend.

WHAT COLORS ARE SIMILAR TO MARITIME WHITE

A few colors were in the running with Maritime White but didn’t make the cut (for various reasons). A few of these are VERY similar to Maritime White in depth and intentions; others are similarly warm, but have a bit more depth.

BENJAMIN MOORE BRITANNIA BLUE

Britannia Blue is a medium-dark shade of blue with a very subtle wink of green – the magic ingredient that makes this blue useable in the average home. Britannia Blue has an LRV of 18.06, so it’s in the medium-dark range and tiptoes in the medium depths.

Benjamin Moore best medium blue gray paint color, Britannia Blue. White upper cabinets, blue lower cabinets and painted kitchen island, chevron tile backsplash ,white oak, offwhite quartz. Kylie M

Along with a touch of green, Brittania Blue has a reasonable, but not overwhelming dose of gray, creating a more calm, subdued approach to blue. To compare it directly with Blue Nova, Britannia Blue looks gray in comparison (it’s not gray), and you can see the green in it a bit easier. And having a bit of green mixed in will make Brittania Blue more useable than Blue Nova (in the average home). However, compare Britannia Blue to a gray with a similar depth, like Amherst Gray, and you’ll see its beautiful blue hue coming through!

The Two Types of Blue & How to Pick Your Best Shade

Why Brittania Blue?

In general, blue greens are more versatile and popular than blue-violets. Of course, there are a few exceptions, especially in the dark range, but blue-green is the boss in the light to medium-dark depths.

Is Britannia Blue a version of navy blue?

Heck no, it’s too light for that. In fact, Britannia Blue is like a fresh, slightly more updated take on navy blue. In previous years, I spent a lot of time consulting on navy blue islands and cabinets. And while these projects are still rolling in (and always will), many are requesting a lighter, brighter approach to blue.

Benjamin Moore Britannia Blue, best medium blue paint color, Omnia white off white quartz countertop, Chevron tile backsplash, White Dove cabinets, Fulgor stainless steel range. KYlie M

Amongst other subtle (and not so subtle shifts), I’ve also noticed my Online Color clients leaning out of the gray range and embracing the more colorful end of things. They’re not into the bright blues…yet, but these smoky blue-grays will be hot in the coming years. Now, let’s check out the best spots to use a color like Britannia Blue.

WHERE DOES BRITANNIA BLUE LOOK BEST?

  • as an accent wall in any room
  • on exterior siding or a front door
  • kitchen cabinets (the whole kitchen)
  • kitchen islands and bathroom vanities
  • an entire room, if you’re so inclined!

SHERWIN WILLIAMS PEWTER GREEN 6208

Pewter Green is a stunner. If you’re looking for a green paint color with depth, without too much darkness, with COLOR, but not too much intensity – this could be your shade.

With its LRV of 12, Pewter Green is a medium-dark shade of green and is clearly shy of dark greens that read like green-black. As for its degree of color (chroma), Pewter Green commits to green but has a reasonable gray backdrop calming it down. While it’s not a gray-green by any stretch, it’s FAR from Kelly or Emerald Green.

I don’t have many great photos of Pewter Green YET, here it is on an accent wall in a commercial space of mine…

Sherwin Williams Pewter Green with gray vinyl concrete look floor and Benjamin Moore White Dove trim, Kylie M

Why Pewter Green?

Pewter Green is like a lighter version of my last year’s fave, Ripe Olive (which I still stand strongly by – shown below). However, while dark greens are still going strong on cabinets, many of my clients yearn for a slightly softer approach for their cabinets and walls.

before and after painted gray cabinets, revere pewte to dark green with Brittanica Warm quartz. Kylie M Online paint color consulting cabinet rendering

Sherwin Williams Ripe Olive

Pewter Green offers a commitment to green, without being punched in the face by Kermit the Frog. It’s moody, earth-toned, and WILDLY flexible with various finishes. I almost bumped it up to Sherwin Williams Retreat, which is a more consistent medium-depth shade of green. And while both will have their place in the coming year, we still love those dark hues.

Let’s look at a few places Pewter Green can be used…

Long story short, green isn’t going anywhere in 2024. Sherwin Williams Evergreen Fog was 2023’s COTY, and it’s stunning and still in high demand. Benjamin Moore rocked the color world with October Mist in 2022, and I still get requests for it.

Green is timeless; it just comes down to the right color, in the right depth, in the right spot.

2024 will have us exploring these mid-toned greens and DARKER shades of green as well, especially colors like Pewter Green.

The 15 Best MEDIUM to DARK Green Paint Colors

SHERWIN WILLIAMS IRON ORE

It was a toss-up between Sherwin Williams Black Fox, Benjamin Moore Willow, and Iron Ore. I kicked out Willow first, as it’s too warm, so it was down to Black Fox, and Iron Ore.

And while it KILLS me not to choose Black Fox or Willow, I really wanted to…

Ultimately, I chose the color that still caters to yesterday’s black trends while winking at a softer look: Iron Ore. Black Fox put up a good argument – it’s a gorgeous dark gray and brown blend, (with a tiny wink of green for good luck). And while I expect to see it on exteriors in the coming year, I don’t think it will have the popularity of Iron Ore.

Sherwin Williams Black Fox door and Canvas Tan walls

As for Willow – be still my beating heart, I LOVE THIS COLOR. And it’s BROWN, people! Who would have seen THAT coming? However, whereas many browns are super fudgy (technical term), Willow is grounded by a gorgeous gray base, leaving you with a muted, passive warmth that’s great for exteriors, trims, and accent walls. HOWEVER, we’re not quite at that warmth…yet.

Why Iron Ore?

While black is still reasonably popular as a hardware finish, its popularity on cabinets and exteriors is waning. It’s not gone, but I see my clients exploring softer, more interesting shades of black, colors like Iron Ore.

Notice the contrast of Iron Ore with the black door hardware

Iron Ore is a soft shade of black. With an LRV of 6, it’s not as saturated as Sherwin Williams Tricorn Black (still hugely popular) but isn’t light enough to be considered a dark gray or charcoal paint color. This softness has Iron Ore coming in hot for 2024, and I expect to see it on many surfaces, including…

SHERWIN WILLIAMS EGRET WHITE

Egret White is a warm, neutral paint color. Some see it as warm gray; others find its warmth caters more to taupe – which is more its tendency. The best thing about Egret White is that while many taupes commit hard to violet-pink undertones, Egret White (like Edgecomb Gray) has MINIMAL undertone commitment.

Sherwin Williams Egret White, best neutral greige taupe warm gray paint color, fabric sofa, brick fireplace, home decor. Kylie M Online Paint color consulting, coffee table decor

Why Egret White?

Egret White is an awesome color as it’s transitional. Many homes have difficulty shifting out of the BEIGE world of the early 2000s, while others are buried in gray and are looking to warm up their rooms. This is where Egret White comes in.

Egret White bridges the warm and cool worlds, humoring many beige finishes common in today’s home and some gray-on-gray palettes from the previous five years.

Sure, I see a LOT of you leaning into beige – trends are definitely going this way. But for those of you not quite there, Egret White could be the perfect happy medium.

WHERE DOES EGRET WHITE LOOK GOOD?

  • in a single room, as it accommodates a wide range of adjoining colors
  • multiple rooms or entire homes
  • for those who want an off-white exterior with no strong yellow
  • interesting cabinet color with the right countertop/backsplash

A SURPRISING SHADE OF ORANGE (WE’RE GETTIN’ DIRTY)

If you’re surprised that ORANGE is the inspiration for Sherwin Williams 2024 Color of the Year – join the club (this Lowe’s HGTV HOME version of Sherwin Williams).

Am I a bit disappointed in Persimmon?

Yes. I strongly believe any Color of the Year should get you EXCITED TO PAINT. According to my Instagram followers, this shade has people as excited as a nudist in a clothing store. According to one astute follower, this color looks like Big Mac’s special sauce (nom nom).

How does a color get people excited?

By being useable on a large-scale – walls, cabinets, exteriors, doors, furniture – the more usable a color is, the more homes it can satisfy – Persimmon isn’t super usable.

I like Persimmon because it’s a pretty color in general; I just don’t see it being a fan fave. IN FACT, it’s not really THAT different from Sherwin’s 2023 color choice – Redend Point.

I wish paint brands would talk to me.

With over one million page views per MONTH (and subsequent Color Consult requests), I have a bead on what the average homeowner is looking for. Sadly, it ain’t this.

But hey, maybe you’re not so average, so let’s dive deeper to see if Persimmon inspires you to whip out ye old paintbrush.

Sherwin Williams Persimmon, paint color review, orange, terra cotta shade by Kylie M Edesign, online paint color consultant (1)

BEFORE WE GET STARTED…

To show you RELATEABLE & REAL homes, I ONLY use photos from my Online Color Consulting clients. This means I don’t always have the quality photos I need or the RIGHT photos, but DEFINITELY have some SUPER helpful info to help you on your way!

IS PERSIMMON A WARM OR COOL PAINT COLOR?

Persimmon is definitely a warm paint color from the orange family. However, unlike its brighter cousins, Persimmon has a neutral base calming it down, making it a dirty shade of orange. This soothing backdrop gives Persimmon a subtle terra cotta look, although a terra cotta with a ‘bit more orange than average.’

Do I wish it were more muted? YOU BET YOUR BOOTY I DO; hence the reason I’m only slightly inspired. For the average homeowner, the degree of color in Persimmon leaves it a wink less useable.

Sherwin Williams Persimmon in living room, Sherwin Williams

Via Sherwin Williams simulator, as I have no clients who’ve used this shade

As shown in the above simulated image, Persimmon is a bit uneasy with the off-white furniture and slightly grayish trim, and built-in cabinets. It’s also a bit touchy with the subtle cream of the drapes. These are pretty ‘average colors in the average home,’ showing how Persimmon isn’t the EASIEST color to coordinate with.

All of this doesn’t mean Persimmon isn’t PRETTY; it’s just PERSNICKETY

North, East, South, West – Which Paint Color is the Best?

WHAT’S PERSIMMON’S LRV?

Persimmon has an LRV of 39. This puts this lovely shade of orange in the soft, medium depths.

Not sure what LRV is? It could save your paint-lovin’ life – read all about it HERE.

How to Make a Dark Room Look Brighter – and it ain’t with paint!

WHAT UNDERTONES DOES PERSIMMON HAVE?

Persimmon is an orange paint color. Orange can be orange-yellow or orange-pink. Persimmon is orange-pink with a neutral base to take the edge off.

The Ultimate Guide to Paint Colors & Undertones

SAMPLING PERSIMMON WITH PEEL & STICK

SAMPLIZE offers peel-and-stick paint samples that are more AFFORDABLE, EASIER, and more ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY than traditional paint pots.

WHAT WHITE TRIM COLOR GOES WITH PERSIMMON?

This is a tough one. The most popular white trim colors are bright white or soft, warm white. However, bright white is pretty stark for the softness of Persimmon, and warm whites have YELLOW undertones, not orange-pink ones. There ISN’T a white that I love with Persimmon.

The challenge from here is that if you don’t have white trim, you don’t have a flexible trim color on a large scale. This means that…

OPTION 1 – LISTEN TO PERSIMMON

You pick the BEST trim color to suit Persimmon. This means your Persimmon-painted room will have a different trim color from the rest of your home, as you wouldn’t want to carry this particular trim color through your home (it’s not flexible).

This would be something like Sherwin Williams Nearly Peach, but I would ask the paint store to make me two samples – one sample 25% lighter and one sample 50% lighter. I haven’t seen these in action to say for SURE which one I’d choose. Undertones shift as colors lighten, but this could get you closer to white while having some of the undertones Persimmon loves.

OPTION 2 – PAINT THE WALLS & TRIM THE SAME

You CAN paint the trim the same color as the walls, but it’s definitely not a look I love with a color like this.

OPTION 3 – FIND A HAPPY MEDIUM

Consider painting your trim the best white possible, a white you can use in adjoining rooms, as it’s versatile (even if it’s not Persimmon’s BEST partner). Ultimately, if you consider your home on a large scale, it’s ideal if the same white trim runs throughout.

As a happy medium, I’m eyeing Sherwin Williams White Flour with Persimmon. Not a color I’d use on ALL of my home’s trim, as it’s not super flexible (but it’s not the worst). I still don’t looooove it with Persimmon, as it doesn’t have an orange-pink hue, but it will transition well enough should you use a more versatile white in adjoining rooms. Sometimes a happy medium is the best choice of all.

PERSIMMON, SHERWIN WILLIAMS COLOR OF THE YEAR 2024. KYLIE M INTERIORS, IN BATHROOM WITH GRANITE COUNTERTOP

If I choose from THE most popular, flexible shades of white, I land on Sherwin Williams Pure White (but it’s no screamin’ glory with Persimmon). Actually, I might bump over to Benjamin Moore and go with White Dove.

The ULTIMATE GUIDE to White Paint Colors

IS PERSIMMON A GOOD COLOR FOR THE EXTERIOR OF A HOME?

Long story short (for once) – HECK to the NO! Okay, there could be the odd exception, but this color won’t suit the average home’s exterior.

Again, to show you REAL homes with real budgets, I use my own photos or those from my Online Paint Color Consulting clients. This next image (as well as the others) is just a simulated one from Sherwin Williams…

Persimmon orange, terra cotta on exterior of home with white trim, Sherwin Williams

Is it BAD? No, but people aren’t going to drive by and think this home looks any kind of awesome. It’s not SUPER happy with this bright white trim but is ooookay with the roof. Also, with natural light, it’s bound to look lighter than it does here.

This doesn’t mean it won’t work on YOUR home, but if your home is pretty average for your neighborhood, I’m doubtful.

HOWEVER, let’s talk about your front door…

How Your Home’s Exposure Affects Its Paint Color

IS PERSIMMON A GOOD CHOICE FOR A FRONT DOOR?

Now we’re talking. While I’d hesitate before throwing Persimmon on my siding, it’s an interesting choice for a front door, granted it suits your surrounding brick/stone/roof/siding.

5 Tips for Choosing an Exterior Paint Color

IS PERSIMMON A GOOD COLOR FOR KITCHEN CABINETS OR AN ISLAND?

Again, I really wish brands considered MASS USABILITY when looking for their Colors of the Year. NO, I don’t see Persimmon being popular on kitchen cabinets, islands, or bathroom vanities.

The Best Paint Colors for Kitchen Island & Bathroom Vanities

HOW TO DECORATE YOUR HOME WITH SHERWIN WILLIAMS PERSIMMON

If you’re wondering how to use Persimmon in your home, let’s see where it has the MOST potential…

  • as an accent color in linens and decor (which certainly doesn’t sell paint)
  • as a ‘whole room’ paint color – it’s not a great accent wall color or for more than one room, really (I mean, you do you, but I wouldn’t)
  • on your front door – inside or outside
  • maybe some small furniture pieces, like bedroom side tables
  • in a palette with other gorgeous earthy-inspired shades…

WHICH PAINT COLORS GO WITH PERSIMMON?

Now THIS is where we get to have some fun! Being a gorgeous shade of orange with a subtle terra cotta vibe, Persimmon has quite a few colorful friends…

Sherwin Williams Persimmon, paint colors that go with coordinate. Kylie M Interiors online paint color consultant (2)

Blobs are just computerized versions of some of the colors below

  • muted shades of medium to dark, slightly warm green, like Sherwin Williams Svelte Sage and Connected Gray
  • darker shades of orange-pink with similarly dirty undertones, such as Spicy Hue
  • cooler shades of green (slightly green-blue) like Sherwin Williams Retreat and the slightly more colorful Underseas
  • muted chocolate hues like Sherwin Williams Mocha
  • SUPER dark, muted shades of green and greige, such as Sherwin Williams Thunder Gray or Rock Bottom
  • light colors with orange-pink hues – in other words, peaches, like Sherwin Williams Spun Sugar and Nearly Peach
  • interesting mid-toned greige/tans like Sherwin Williams Urban Jungle, Sherwin Williams Jogging Path, and dark greiges such as Porpoise

However, the real struggle with Persimmon is that there aren’t many light colors that look great. Or there are some, but they’re not colors used in the average home.

For example, Persimmon isn’t great with light gray, greige, taupe, tan, cream, white, or the average beige. Light colors that work best with Persimmon have a DECENT amount of orange-pink undertone – colors that most people are trying to get away from; although if you love peach, you’ll be in your glory!

Sherwin Williams Bauhaus Buff and Fragile Beauty are where Persimmon starts looking better (slightly) while still appealing to the average homeowner; however, these are neutrals with stronger undertones. The majority (i.e., 99.5%) of my Online Paint Color clients prefer neutrals that are more neutral and versatile.

WHAT OTHER COLORS ARE SIMILAR TO PERSIMMON?

Comparing paint colors is the BEST way to choose the one that best suits your home’s finishes. So, if I’m eyeing up Persimmon, I’ll also grab samples of…

  • Sherwin Williams Rose Tan (more pink/less orange – also more neutral)
  • Sherwin Williams Portrait Tone (only available in a sample pot at your SW store)
  • Benjamin Moore Vegetable Patch (a bit darker and more orange)
  • Sherwin Williams Subdued Sienna (a touch darker)
  • Benjamin Moore Sweet & Sour (less pink than Persimmon/more orange)

FUN FACT: I actually like all of the above MORE than Persimmon.

Why?

Again, I actually love Persimmon, but it has just a TOUCH too much orange (at this particular depth) to be useable on the average wall/exterior/door/cabinet.

By the way, if you’re considering getting one brand to match another’s paint color, I DON’T recommend it. Read why HERE.

COMPARING WHITE DOVE, SWISS COFFEE, PURE WHITE, ALABASTER, & MORE

Gone are the days when you go to the paint store and grab any old gallon of white paint. Sure, you CAN, but I almost guarantee it’s not the RIGHT white for your walls, trims, or cabinets.

Why?

Because sneaky undertones like blue, pink, gray, and yellow hide inside even the most seemingly ‘white’ paint colors. These undertones can clash with surrounding finishes if they aren’t coordinated carefully (insert Kylie HERE). On the other hand, if a white DOESN’T have undertones, it can be too stark and clinical for the average home.

So how do you find the BEST white paint color for your walls, trims, cabinets, or exterior?

You COMPARE. Which is what we’re doing in this blog post with one of my FAVORITE white paint colors – Benjamin Moore White Dove.

BTW, my blog posts usually include photos of my client’s homes. HOWEVER, this is an INFO-HEAVY blog post, giving you the deets you need with less muss n’ fuss. If you’re just here for the pretty pictures (I feel you), check out each color’s FULL COLOR REVIEW (links throughout).

Now, before we get this color party started (or lack of color, seeing as they’re all whites), let’s touch briefly on LRV.

Oak wood floors in kitchen with wood island, red oak floor, Caesarstone Staturio Nuvo white quartz countertop, pendants, mural in eating nook,. White Dove walls. Kylie M Interiors E-Design

Not sure what LRV is?

The quick n’ dirty is that EVERY paint color has an LRV number on a scale of 0-100. 0 is black, and 100 is white. This number tells you how light or dark a paint color is!

When it comes to white paint colors, LRV matters…A LOT!

The LRV of white paint colors goes from approx 81-94 (there aren’t any brighter whites in the paint world…yet). Intrigued? You should be; it will rock your paint-pickin’ world – read about it HERE.

Now without FURTHER ado…

Benjamin moore vs the best white paint colors White Dove, Cloud White, Pure White. Kylie M Color expert, edesign (1)

BENJAMIN MOORE WHITE DOVE VS CLOUD WHITE

White Dove and Cloud White have been kickin’ it a long time. HOWEVER, when it comes to the most popular white used in the early 2000s, Cloud White is MILES ahead of White Dove, and for good reason.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BENJAMIN MOORE CLOUD WHITE VS WHITE DOVE, UNDERTONES. KYLIE M INTERIORS EDESIGN COLOR EXPERT, BEST WHITE PAINT COLORS

Cloud White is WARMER than White Dove (cream-yellow undertone). This difference makes Cloud White a bit better suited to the Tuscan style of the early 2000s, as well as the accompanying earth tones, countertops, and beige finishes. White Dove has come on the scene more in the last decade as trends leaned cooler. However, with trends shifting (yes, again), I wouldn’t be surprised to see Cloud White rising in the ranks!

As for depth, while both White Dove and Cloud White are soft, warm whites, there’s a subtle difference in depth, with Cloud White being the brighter of the two shades.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WHITE DOVE & CLOUD WHITE?

  • White Dove LRV: 83.16 / Cloud White LRV: 85.05
  • Cloud White is BRIGHTER & whiter than White Dove.
  • Cloud White is WARMER than White Dove, although both are warm whites.
  • Cloud White is often better suited to popular granite & laminate countertops from the early 2000s.
  • As a trim or cabinet color, off-white and light-depth paint colors often suit White Dove over Cloud White due to White Dove’s more subtle warmth.
  • White Dove and Cloud White are equally as pretty in cool north-facing and east-facing rooms with dull afternoon light.
  • Expect both colors to look even warmer in south-facing and western light.

KYLIE’S M’S FAVE COLOR

Unless a space NEEDS a more definitive creamy warmth, I prefer White Dove to Cloud White. I like that it offers warmth without quite as much yellow.

BENJAMIN MOORE WHITE DOVE VS SWISS COFFEE

White Dove versus Swiss Coffee – which one do you choose? (Insert White Dove HERE.) Just joking…kind of.

BENJAMIN MOORE SWISS COFFEE VS WHITE DOVE. UNDERTONES, BEST WHITE PAINT COLORS. KYLIE M EDESIGN COLOR EXPERT

White Dove and Swiss Coffee are similar in depth as both are soft whites, but Swiss Coffee is a bit darker than White Dove due to its lower LRV.

In the temperature department, expect to see a BIT more warmth in Swiss Coffee compared to White Dove. And while both are soft, warm whites (yellow undertones), of the two, Swiss Coffee is sliiiiightly more likely to pick up a wee flash of green.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WHITE DOVE & SWISS COFFEE?

  • White Dove LRV: 83.16 / Swiss Coffee LRV: 81.91
  • White Dove is BRIGHTER than Swiss Coffee, but not by a LOT (approx 15%).
  • Swiss Coffee can look a bit WARMER than White Dove.
  • Both of these popular shades of white have a cream-yellow undertone, but Swiss Coffee is a touch more likely to pick up green (insert mild twitching HERE)
  • White Dove and Swiss Coffee are both popular choices for cool north-facing rooms.

The 3 Best White Paint Colors for North-Facing Rooms

KYLIE M’S FAVE COLOR

White Dove and Swiss Coffee are often in the running for the same place on the podium. However, if it weren’t for Studio McGee using Swiss Coffee, it would be clear that White Dove is the better color due to its more predictable approach.

Long story short, I’ve suggested White Dove hundreds (possibly thousands) of times to my Online Paint Color Consulting clients. I’ve suggested Swiss Coffee twice. Nuff said.

BENJAMIN MOORE WHITE DOVE VS SIMPLY WHITE

White Dove and Simply White are two of Benjamin Moore’s more popular white paint colors, but there are a few BIG differences.

BENJAMIN MOORE SIMPLY WHITE VS WHITE DOVE, DIFFERENCES BY KYLIE M EDESIGN COLOR EXPERT - BEST PAINT COLORS

When you compare Simply White and White Dove, it’s clear that Simply White is a BRIGHTER, cleaner white. This means that Simply White is closer to being a true white compared to White Dove.

However, these two shades are similar as they’re both warm whites and have a yellow undertone. The main difference is that Simply White’s warmth is cleaner, meaning the yellow can sometimes show up at the party a bit more.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WHITE DOVE & SIMPLY WHITE?

  • White Dove LRV: 83.16 / Simply White LRV: 89.52
  • Simply White is a BRIGHTER white; White Dove is a SOFT white.
  • Simply White is CLEANER than White Dove and can flash a bit more yellow undertone.
  • Both whites work in northern light to add balance; both will pick up more yellow/cream warmth in the southern or western afternoon sun.

The Ultimate Guide to Choosing White Paint Colors

KYLIE M’S FAVE COLOR

While both whites are often in the running, USUALLY a room needs a soft, warm white OR a brighter warm white. Between the two, I prefer White Dove for its more subtle approach.

BENJAMIN MOORE WHITE DOVE VS CHANTILLY LACE

While White Dove and Chantilly Lace are both white paint colors – that’s about all they have in common.

BENJAMIN MOORE WHITE DOVE VS CHANTILLY LACE, BEST WHITE PAINT COLORS DIFFERENCES. KYLIE M COLOR EXPERT

Chantilly Lace is pretty darn white. Sure, there are WHITER whites, but as far as BM goes – this is it. This means Chantilly Lace sits at the BRIGHT end of the white spectrum, and White Dove sits at the SOFT end. So, while they’re often competing as trim colors, they both offer different looks.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WHITE DOVE & CHANTILLY LACE?

  • White Dove LRV: 83.16 / Chantilly Lace LRV: 90.04
  • Chantilly Lace is a BRIGHTER white, whereas White Dove is a considerably SOFT shade of white.
  • Chantilly Lace is Benjamin Moore’s WHITEST white with fractional warmth. White Dove has a very noticeable warmth in comparison.
  • White Dove offers a softer, more MUTED contrast with wall colors. Chantilly Lace is a more CLEAN, crisp partner to wall colors.
  • Chantilly Lace can be a bit cool for northern light, but like White Dove, it picks up a pretty warmth in south-facing or afternoon western sunshine.
  • Chantilly Lace is often better for gray or cool-toned countertops/tiles, whereas White Dove can humor SOME grays but some warmer finishes as well.

North, East, South, West – Which Paint Color is the Best?

KYLIE M’S FAVE COLOR

It’s a toss-up. While I love the softness of White Dove, I appreciate the clean but not cold/stark look of Chantilly Lace. Let’s just say they BOTH have their place; it all comes down to whether I want a softer look (White Dove) or something a bit brighter (Chantilly Lace).

The 5 Types of White Paint Colors

BENJAMIN MOORE WHITE DOVE VS SHERWIN WILLIAMS PURE WHITE

White Dove is a soft white – Pure White is also a soft white. This is due to their respective LRVs of 83.16 and 84. The main difference is that White Dove is WARMER and creamier than Pure White.

COMPARING BENJAMIN MOORE WHITE DOVE VS SHERWIN PURE WHITE. DIFFERENCES BY KYLIE M EDESIGN COLOR EXPERT, BEST WHITE PAINT COLORS

Because of this difference, Pure White is often a better choice with the average white quartz countertops, whereas White Dove’s subtle warmth can be a bit TOO yellow at times for these finishes.

White Dove is often better suited to beige-infused homes (i.e., Tuscan style), whereas Pure White is usually too flat/not warm enough.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WHITE DOVE & PURE WHITE?

  • White Dove LRV: 83.16 / Pure White LRV 84
  • Pure White is a touch BRIGHTER than White Dove.
  • White Dove is WARMER and a bit creamier than Pure White.
  • Pure White is often better suited for white quartz countertops.
  • Pure White CAN fall a bit flat in northern light or east/west-facing rooms at their flat times of the day.
  • White Dove has more warmth than Pure White, making it better suited to cool northern rooms.

Kylie M’s Top 3 White Paint Color COLLECTIONS: with Samplize

KYLIE M’S FAVE COLOR

Don’t do this to me…don’t make me pick. The thing is, these two are often vying for the same spot for a good reason; it’s more about the APPROACH you want. With Pure White being less warm, it can look a bit cleaner than White Dove (without being overly crisp). However, there can be just as much appeal in the subtle warmth of White Dove and its slightly more muted approach.

What breaks the tie is that while I would put White Dove in many north, east, south, and west-facing rooms. However, Pure White isn’t always warm enough for a north-facing space and can fall a bit flat in morning western/afternoon eastern light.

WHITE DOVE FOR THE WIN!

BENJAMIN MOORE WHITE DOVE VS SHERWIN WILLIAMS ALABASTER

While White Dove and Alabaster are warm white paint colors, the main difference is in the DEGREE of warmth. Alabaster is warmer and creamier than White Dove. This makes Alabaster a popular choice with many traditional granite countertops, although White Dove does work with a few.

Compare Benjamin Moore White Dove, Sherwin Alabaster, differences. Kylie M Interiors Edesign, color expert, best white paint colors (2)

Both Alabaster and White Dove suit north-facing rooms if you want to balance the cool light with some warmth. However, both will lean EVEN WARMER south or strong afternoon western sunshine.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WHITE DOVE & ALABASTER?

  • White Dove LRV: 83.16 / Alabaster LRV: 82
  • Alabaster is NOT AS BRIGHT as White Dove and is closer to being an off-white (although both are soft whites).
  • Alabaster is WARMER (more cream-yellow) than White Dove.
  • Alabaster can be beautiful with some popular granite countertops; White Dove is hit-and-miss but can work.
  • Both can be too warm for many of the popular white quartz countertops (marble-look).

A Gorgeous Home Makeover with Sherwin Williams Alabaster

KYLIE M’S FAVE COLOR

White Dove…all the way. Sure, Alabaster wins MOST of the time when it comes to granite and laminate countertops from the early 2000s, but OVERALL, the more subtle warmth of White Dove makes it an easy choice. Remember, this is my PERSONAL opinion – you and your home might feel otherwise!

BENJAMIN MOORE WHITE DOVE VS HIGH REFLECTIVE WHITE

If you’re choosing between White Dove and High Reflective White, there should be a VERY clear winner.

Why?

Because White Dove and High Reflective White are on OPPOSITE sides when it comes to the wild world of whites!

SHERWIN WILLIAMS HIGH REFLECTIVE WHITE, ULTRA WHITE, VERSUS WHITE DOVE, BENJAMIN MOORE. KYLIE M COLOR EXPERT, BEST WHITE PAINT COLORS

High Reflective White is a TRUE white (a stitch whiter than Chantilly Lace), whereas White Dove is a soft white. While they could maaaaybe be vying for the same spot on your trim, one is likely the FAR better choice based on the needs of your finishes.

High Reflective White is known as Ultra White in Sherwin William’s Emerald paint line. So, while regular High Reflective White doesn’t have good coverage, the Emerald version is MUCH better (pricier, but better).

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WHITE DOVE & HIGH REFLECTIVE WHITE?

  • White Dove LRV: 83.16 / High Reflective White LRV: 93
  • High Reflective White is a TRUE white; White Dove is a soft, warm white.
  • White Dove often suits a range of quartz, laminate, and granite countertops. High Reflective White suits fewer countertops, usually cooler or fractionally warm ones.

How to Get the REAL High Reflective White & Not the DUPE

KYLIE M’S FAVE COLOR

Personally, there’s no competition; it’s White Dove all the way. High Reflective White has its place, but it’s not USUALLY in a home with a blend of warm and cool finishes (or all warm finishes). High Reflective White tolerates moderately warm colors but LOVES the cooler end of things, making it less easy to please than White Dove.

BENJAMIN MOORE WHITE DOVE VS SNOWBOUND

When comparing White Dove and Snowbound, we’re comparing apples to oranges – sure, they have a similar SHAPE, but they sure as heck taste different.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN BENJAMIN MOORE WHITE DOVE VS SHERWIN WILLIAMS SNOWBOUND, KYLIE M EDESIGN COLOR EXPERT (1)

Snowbound is like a soft white with gray in it. And because EVERY gray has undertones, expect Snowbound to have them too – violet-pink. I want to tell you these undertones are subtle, and while they caaaan be, it doesn’t take much for them to pop, especially when Snowbound’s used as a wall application.

Where Snowbound and White Dove are super similar is that their LRVs are just fractions of a point apart, making them both very comparable soft whites.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WHITE DOVE & SNOWBOUND?

  • White Dove LRV: 83.16 / Snowbound LRV: 83
  • Snowbound and White Dove are both soft whites, but White Dove is considerably warmer/creamier.
  • White Dove will pick up cream undertones; Snowbound can grab violet-pink and occasionally a touch of warmth.
  • Snowbound can be fussy with its surroundings and should only be chosen when needed. White Dove is more versatile.

Sherwin William’s 3 Best Warm White Paint Colors

Do I even need to say? Yes, Snowbound has its place, but for the average home, room, and surface, White Dove is WAY more versatile and predictable.

BENJAMIN MOORE WHITE DOVE VS GREEK VILLA

In the battle of White Dove versus Greek Villa, it’s a pretty close race.

differences benjamin moore white dove, sherwin greek villa. kylie m edesign, color expert, best white paint colors (1)

White Dove and Greek Villa are kissin’ cousins, both having similar DNAs, I mean, LRVs (same thing, really). These two popular white shades are soft whites, as their LRVs are in the low 80s. This makes them a popular choice with various countertops, tiles, and interior finishes.

HOWEVER, whereas Greek Villa has slightly more noticeable yellow undertones, White Dove is more passive in its approach. And while every color has its place, it’s more often White Dove that’s suited to the job.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WHITE DOVE & GREEK VILLA?

  • White Dove LRV: 83.16 / Greek Villa LRV: 84
  • Greek Villa and White Dove are very comparable warm whites.
  • Greek Villa offers a bit more warmth/yellow than White Dove and can look a touch cleaner.
  • With less yellow/warmth, White Dove is often a safer, more versatile choice.

White Walls, Cabinets, & Trim: Do They Need to be the SAME WHITE?

KYLIE M’S FAVE COLOR

White Dove…every time. I rarely need the increased yellow found in Greek Villa. And if I do, I usually turn to Cloud White or Simply White. Again, you do you, boo; if Greek Villa is your jam and it suits your home, fill yer lil white boots!

BENJAMIN MOORE WHITE DOVE VS CHEVIOT

While Cheviot and White Dove are both warm paint colors, upon close comparison, they’re heading in different directions.

SHERWIN WILLIAMS EMERALD, CHEVIOT VERSUS BENJAMIN WHITE DOVE, BEST WHITE PAINT COLOR COMPARISONS WITH KYLIE M COLOR EXPERT

Cheviot is a BRIGHTER white than White Dove due to their differences in LRV. With an LRV of 89, Cheviot is closer to being a bright white. However, the subtlety of its warmth is SIMILAR to White Dove; it’s just the shift in depth that sets them considerably apart.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WHITE DOVE & CHEVIOT?

  • White Dove LRV: 83.16 / Cheviot LRV: 89
  • Cheviot is a brighter white compared to White Dove and comes across as cleaner/less muted.
  • Cheviot is MORE comparable to Benjamin Moore’s Simply White but is slightly less yellow.

The Pros & Cons of Off-White or Light Depth Painted Cabinets

KYLIE M’S FAVE COLOR

With the higher price tag on Sherwin Williams Emerald paint, I haven’t had a chance to play with Cheviot enough. HOWEVER, if I were to, I feel like it would be in the running as my FAVE shade of white.

Why?

With its passive warmth but increased brightness, Cheviot could fill a spot that neither Benjamin Moore nor Sherwin Williams has touched with any other whites!

Sherwin Williams Emerald Collection: 9 New White Paint Colors (INCLUDING CHEVIOT!)

PEOPLE ALSO ASK…

WHAT COLOR COMPARES TO WHITE DOVE? WHAT’S THE CLOSEST MATCH?

There is no perfect match to White Dove as there will ALWAYS be changes in undertone/temperature/depth. The closest color to White Dove is Sherwin Williams Greek Villa.

IS WHITE DOVE TOO WHITE?

If you’re worried that White Dove is too white, you’re PROBABLY looking for an off-white. If you want a color with a bit more depth and body, then yes, White Dove COULD be too white.

In the ‘world of white,’ White Dove is sometimes seen as ‘not white enough.’

DOES WHITE DOVE LOOK DINGY?

It depends on what you’re comparing it to.

  • Compared to cream with a lot of yellow, White Dove can look dirty.
  • In a low-light room, White Dove can look dingy.
  • If you’re comparing/partnering it with a brighter, cleaner white, White Dove will look dirty.
  • In the wild world of whites, White Dove is one of the warmer, dirtier whites, but it still has a good life to it in the right environment.

SHERWIN WILLIAMS NAVAL: 2020 COLOR OF THE YEAR

Naval didn’t win ‘Color of the Year’ because it’s boring. In fact, it’s a stunning and bold navy blue that has taken the design world by storm. Read on to explore the many facets of Naval and what makes it a great choice for almost any space.

IS NAVAL A WARM OR COOL PAINT COLOR?

Being a beautiful shade of blue, Naval is automatically a COOL paint color.

If you have a room with southern or afternoon western sun, Naval is a great way to balance your warm natural light without making the room look icy cold. On the other hand, if you have northern light, whereas a LIGHT blue could be too cold looking, the depth of Naval gives it a cozier look.

North, East, South, West – Which Paint Color is the Best?

WHAT’S NAVAL’S LRV?

Naval has an LRV of 4! Holy bleep, that’s deep! A color with an LRV this low ABSORBS light rather than reflecting it. Naval’s best used in rooms with ample natural light or artificial lighting (or just as an accent or feature wall). If you have VERY little light, Naval could look a touch blackish, but you’ll see the blue pop up here any light does hit it.

Not sure what LRV is? It could save your paint-lovin’ life – read all about it HERE.

IS NAVAL A GOOD COLOR FOR THE EXTERIOR OF A HOME?

Naval can be a stunning choice for your exterior, particularly for front doors and shutters (assuming it suits the exterior of your home’s features). If you’re considering Naval for your whole home, it can make a beautiful statement. However, be sure you know what you’re signing up for as it’s a VERY dark color, which can fade with southern facing or afternoon western sunlight.

IS NAVAL A GOOD COLOR FOR KITCHEN CABINETS?

Almost any color CAN look good on cabinets, but it MUST suit the backsplash and countertop. While Naval could definitely be a jaw-dropping cabinet color, typically, I recommend it more for islands or vanities. Why? Because Naval works as an amazing accent color. It looks fantastic with whites and wood tones, so mixing it in rather than being the main focus is my preference.

QUIET MOMENTS, A TRANQUIL GREEN-GRAY-BLUE BLEND THAT CAN SOOTHE YOUR SOUL

Quiet Moments (also known as Smoky Green) is a STUNNING color that creates a serene and calming atmosphere in any room. But is this blue hue the right one for you? Let’s see what it can do…

Benjamin Moore Quiet Moments Color Review Kylie M Interiors EDesign

BEFORE WE GET STARTED…

To show you RELATEABLE & REAL homes, I ONLY use photos from my Online Color Consulting clients. This means I don’t always have the quality photos I need or the RIGHT photos, but DEFINITELY have some SUPER helpful info to help you on your way!

IS QUIET MOMENTS A WARM OR COOL PAINT COLOR?

Quiet Moments is a cool-toned color mix of blue and green. However, it’s the subtle gray that makes Quiet Moments such a great shade for creating a calming and relaxing mood in almost any room.

North, East, South, West – Which Paint Color is the Best?

WHAT IS QUIET MOMENTS’ LRV?

Quiet Moments has an LRV of 60.73, which can help a room feel lighter and brighter as it will reflect artificial and natural light into the space. And while it will wash out in intense natural light, come evening, it settles back down with the perfect amount of contrast with white trim. In fact, it’s DARN CLOSE to my fave LRV number for the average room!

Not sure what LRV is? It could save your paint-lovin’ life – read all about it HERE.

The Best Paint NUMBER for Your Home – 62

The Best LIGHT Paint Colors for a DARK room

WHAT UNDERTONES DOES QUIET MOMENTS HAVE?

Quiet Moments is a blue-green at heart with GRAY undertones. However, most colors cater more to one color or another. In Quiet Moments’ case, it tends to cater towards blue OVER green; however, this can shift depending on your room’s exposure, interior lighting, and the other colors used in the space. For example, if you like warm light bulbs with lower KELVINS (i.e., 2800), you might see Quiet Moments favoring green over blue.

  • In certain south-facing rooms, Quiet Moments may lean a wink into its green side.
  • In north-facing rooms, it may go a bit more blue with just a hint of green popping up.
  • In a room with varying exposures (common in open layouts), Quiet Moments will likely vary and shift throughout the day. Sometimes being greener and sometimes leaning into the blue. It’s one that you FOR SURE want to sample and test in the room’s exposures throughout the day to see how it sits.

With that said, you’ve gotta sample this one carefully to make sure it gives the look you’re going for.

WHAT WHITE TRIM COLORS GO WITH QUIET MOMENTS?

When it comes to pairing white trim with Quiet Moments, you have a few options. A brighter white like Chantilly Lace will create a beautiful contrast with the cool blue-green hue of Quiet Moments. Alternatively, you could choose a softer, warmer white to create a more subtle transition between the walls and trim, like Benjamin Moore White Dove; the warm-cool partnership can be very pretty and even a bit beachy-looking.

The ULTIMATE GUIDE to White Paint Colors

3 Steps to Picking the Best White Paint Color

IS QUIET MOMENTS A GOOD COLOR FOR THE EXTERIOR OF A HOME?

Quiet Moments could be a great choice for the exterior of homes as it creates a serene and coastal look. HOWEVER, if you get a lot of natural light, it will wash out…a lot. For this reason, I would lean into a color with a bit more depth (personally). If you fall in love with Quiet Moments, make sure you have clean white trim along the lines of Sherwin Williams High Reflective White, just to get a clean, crisp contrast.

5 Tips for Choosing an Exterior Paint Color

Does Your Exposure REALLY MATTER When Choosing EXTERIOR Paint Colors?

IS QUIET MOMENTS A GOOD COLOR FOR KITCHEN CABINETS?

Quiet Moments could be good for cabinets; however, with its LRV, I worry about it looking washed out and losing some of its intended beauty. The sheen of cabinet paint can make a color look a bit lighter than expected, especially in kitchens with good lighting. For this reason, I’m usually inclined towards blue greens with more depth.

How to Choose the Best White Paint Color for Your Kitchen Cabinets

Should You Paint Your Kitchen Cabinets or Keep Them Stained? A QUESTIONNAIRE!

WHAT OTHER COLORS ARE SIMILAR TO QUIET MOMENTS?

Comparison is the KEY to choosing the best paint color for your home. Samplize Peel & Stick makes it easy to explore other colors to see how undertones, temperatures, and LRVs shift…

If you’re looking for a color similar to Quiet Moments, you could consider…

QUIET MOMENTS vs. SIMILAR COLORS

Some of you want more DIRECT comparisons to help you decide which shade is best for your home. This is why I’ve chosen a handful of the most POPULAR blue-green blends and compared them to Quiet Moments…

QUIET MOMENTS vs. SHERWIN WILLIAMS SEA SALT

If you can’t decide between these two beautiful blue greens, I don’t blame you. The only NOTICEABLE difference is that Sea Salt is a touch greener than Quiet Moments, making QM the bluer of the two. So, if you’re looking for a color more likely to cater to blue, Quiet Moments is a slightly safer bet, although both colors are known to shift their allegiance!

  • Sea Salt is more popular than Quiet Moments in general. I can’t even tell you why – maybe we love the name!
  • Both colors are commonly found in bedrooms and bathrooms, but being that bit more colorful, are less likely to be ‘whole home‘ paint colors.
  • Neither color is particular popular on cabinets, front doors, or exteriors, probably because of their depth (the risk of them looking washed out in brighter light).

Sherwin Williams Sea Salt Paint Color Review

QUIET MOMENTS vs. BEACH GLASS

Quiet Moments and Beach Glass are similar in their general color makeup; both are blue-greens with a good shot of gray in them. The noticeable difference is that Beach Glass has a lower LRV of 49.7 than Quiet Moments’ LRV of 60. This makes Beach Glass a darker color that can stand up to bright light without washing out as much as Quiet Moments. However, this increased depth isn’t as fresh and clean looking as Quiet Moments, so it depends on the look you’re going for.

  • Quiet Moments is more popular on walls.
  • While Beach Glass is also popular on walls (especially bedrooms), it’s often on coastal or beach-style front doors, exteriors, and cabinets.

QUIET MOMENTS vs. SHERWIN WILLIAMS SILVER STRAND

These two can definitely fight for the same color slot. With VERY similar LRVs (depth), they offer the same contrast with white trim. The big difference between these two colors is that Silver Strand is a bit grayer and smokier than Quiet Moments. If you’re worried that Quiet Moments has a BIT too much color in it, Silver Strand could hit the spot. And while it can look a weeee bit greener at times, its flexibility is pretty darn similar to Quiet Moments.

  • Both colors are super popular for bedrooms and bathrooms.
  • Both colors suit a muted, calm, spa vibe and are popular for counseling offices.
  • Neither color is popular for exteriors or cabinets. Not saying they can’t work, but they can look a bit washed out.

QUIET MOMENTS vs. PALLADIAN BLUE

If you can’t decide between these gorgeous shades of blue-green, consider the overall LOOK you’re going for.

Both colors have a blue-green-gray blend. However, Palladian Blue has less gray in it, making it more cheerful and colorful looking. And whereas both colors can be calming (depending on your perception), the increased gray of Quiet Moments makes it a popular choice for soothing, calming, spa-inspired rooms.

benjamin moore palladian blue best blue green

  • Palladian Blue is popular for a more cheerful, beachy vibe. It’s also a good choice for kids’ rooms.
  • Quiet Moments has a slightly more spa-inspired look/more casual coastal approach.

WHICH PAINT COLORS GO WITH QUIET MOMENTS?

Quiet Moments pairs well with other soft and subtle colors, such as Benjamin Moore White Dove OC-17 or Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray SW 7029. OR, if you want a more vibrant look, it could look gorgeous with bold accents like yellow, coral, or navy.

Let’s look at a few more color groups suited to Quiet Moments…

GRAB THE SALT & PEPPERCORN FOR THIS DELICIOUS COLOR REVIEW

If you’re looking for a DARK shade of gray that makes a gorgeous statement, you’ve come to the right place.  This deep, rich, warm gray is a HUGELY flexible (but unpredictable) color that can be used in various settings. From modern to traditional, INSIDE to outside, and everything in between, Peppercorn could be just the color you’ve been searching for.

IS PEPPERCORN A WARM OR COOL PAINT COLOR?

While many colors are OBVIOUSLY warm or cool, Peppercorn is tricky as it doesn’t lean significantly one way or the other. This means it’s SUPER unpredictable and can flex with its environment.

If you have south-facing light, Peppercorn could pick up a weeee willy wink o’ warmth without going remotely greige or taupe – to say it’s a warm gray would be a stretch. If you have north-facing light, it will commit more to its gray base without being cold like some traditional gray paint colors.

Generally speaking, it does act like a pretty neutral dark gray paint color, but trust the wee Ginger when she says that this color is HIGHLY unpredictable (which we’ll get into shortly).

North, East, South, West – Which Paint Color is the Best?

WHAT’S PEPPERCORN’S LRV?

Peppercorn has an LRV of 10, which places it in the DARK range (almost to the MEDIUM-DARK range). If you have a bright room, it will lighten up Peppercorn for sure while holding a KILLER contrast with white trim. However, if you have a dark room, you can expect Peppercorn to look more like a soft black.

Not sure what LRV is? It could save your paint-lovin’ life – read all about it HERE.

How to Make a Dark Room Look Brighter – and it ain’t with paint!

The Best Paint NUMBER for Your Home – 62

DOES PEPPERCORN HAVE UNDERTONES?

Every gray has undertones, either blue, green, or purple. Peppercorn can easily flex into ANY of those, making it WILDLY unpredictable. Depending on outside variables, environment, and surroundings, it can flash green, violet, blue, or a melange of all three! As for warmth, in some lights, a polite wink at warmth rises up. In others, it falls right back (based on exposures/light bulbs/etc…) Sampling and comparing are KEY with this one (and every other color, of course).

SAMPLING PEPPERCORN WITH PEEL & STICK

Samplize offers peel-and-stick paint samples that are more AFFORDABLE, EASIER, and more ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY than traditional paint pots. Here are just a few reasons why I recommend Samplize to my clients…

  • if you keep the samples on their white paper, you can move them around the room

WHAT’S THE BEST WHITE TRIM COLOR TO GO WITH PEPPERCORN?

Peppercorn is super flexible and friendly with a WIDE-RANGE of white paint colors. However, it doesn’t LOVE overly creamy warm ones and is more inclined towards the likes of…

  • Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace for a clean contrasting look
  • Benjamin Moore White Dove for a softer, more subtle (but still contrasting) look
  • Benjamin Moore Oxford White, which is in the middle!

The ULTIMATE GUIDE to White Paint Colors

3 Steps to Picking the Best White Paint Color

IS PEPPERCORN A GOOD COLOR FOR THE EXTERIOR OF A HOME?

YASSS! Well, I mean, I can’t promise it’ll look good on YOUR home, but I can say that if your home (roof/stone/brick/surroundings) can handle a dark charcoal gray with flexible undertones, it could look pretty awesome opossum. Just be sure to sample carefully to see if there’s a particular undertone that shows up on your home.

5 Tips for Choosing an Exterior Paint Color

Does Your Exposure REALLY MATTER When Choosing EXTERIOR Paint Colors?

IS PEPPERCORN A GOOD COLOR FOR KITCHEN CABINETS?

You bet your BOOTY it is. With how DARK Peppercorn is and with its lack of predictability, I might not do it everywhere. Still, it could make a gorgeous island accent color or even possibly on the lower cabinets, depending on the other finishes in your kitchen.

WHAT OTHER COLORS ARE SIMILAR TO PEPPERCORN?

Comparison is the KEY to choosing the best paint color for your home. Don’t be afraid to explore other colors to see how undertones, temperatures, and LRVs shift…

Wellllll, this is where it gets awkward (like me in any social situation). Every color has its own look – perfect matches don’t exist. No matter the color, you WILL see shifts in undertones, temperature, and depths.

WHICH PAINT COLORS GO WITH PEPPERCORN?

When it comes to Peppercorn, it’s important to remember that it’s a CONSIDERABLY dark gray with VARYING undertones. This means that the colors it suits can change based on how Peppercorn looks in your space. You might start with colors such as the following…

Jogging Path: undertones, LRV & more!

It can be hard to find the right shade of warm gray or greige. In between undertones, depths and subtle nuances, picking the best neutral for your space needs to be done carefully. This is why I’m glad you’re here, learning more about the best paint colors on the market, including this bad boy…

Review of the best, most popular warm gray and greige paint colours. Sherwin Williams Jogging Path for walls. Kylie M Interiors Edesign.

In order to show you RELATEABLE & REAL homes, I ONLY use photos from my Online Color Consulting clients. This means I don’t always have the quality photos I need or the RIGHT photos, but DEFINITELY have some SUPER helpful info to help you on your way!

What type of paint color is Jogging Path? Is it warm or cool?

With the extra bit of beige in it, Jogging Path steps out of the warm gray world and into the greige world.

Because Jogging Path is a WARM neutral, it’s a great option for cool north-facing rooms, without being so war that it overheats a south-facing space. But no matter WHAT exposure your room is, if it doesn’t have enough light, you might want to avoid Jogging Path altogether (suggestions coming shortly).

Why?

Let’s find out…

North, East, South, West – Which Paint Color is the Best?

What’s the LRV of Jogging Path?

Jogging Path has an LRV of 47, so it’s tucked nicely in the light-medium range. HOWEVER, because of its slightly lower LRV (compared to lighter popular shades of greige), Jogging Path can look heavy in rooms without enough natural light. This depth is compounded by its earthy undertone, which can leave your walls looking a bit muddy or dingy looking.

Not sure what LRV is? It could save your paint lovin’ life – read all about it HERE.

What are the undertones of Jogging Path?

Jogging Path has a VERY legit green undertone. This undertone will never disappear, but also isn’t so overpowering that you have GREEN walls. But if you’re sensitive to green, you may want to a running path away from Jogging Path.

What’s the best way to sample any paint color?

Undoubtedly, you’ll be heading out in the near future to grab paint samples – stop right there! I want you to check out SAMPLIZE. Samplize offers peel and stick paint samples that are more AFFORDABLE, EASIER and more ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY than traditional paint pots. Here are just a FEW reasons why I recommend Samplize to my clients…

  • samples arrive ON YOUR DOORSTEP in 1 DAY, depending on location
  • they’re more affordable than the samples pots/rollers/foam boards that are needed for traditional paint sampling
  • if you keep the samples on their white paper, you can move them around the room

SHOULD I Paint My Wood Cabinets White? A QUESTIONNAIRE

3 Steps to Picking the Best White Paint Color

Is Jogging Path a good color for the exterior of my home?

Jogging Path isn’t a POPULAR exterior paint color, but this doesn’t mean it won’t work for you and your home. Its slightly lower LRV helps it stand up to bright light, but watch that green undertone and make sure it suits your roof, brick or any stonework.

5 Tips to Choosing an Exterior Paint Color

Does Your Exposure REALLY MATTER When Choosing EXTERIOR Paint Colors?

Is Jogging Path a popular color for kitchen cabinets?

The only person who would like Jogging Path on their cabinets is Miss Piggy as it’s just too green for most homeowners. In my Online Consulting adventures, I find that people lean into the likes of Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter which is lighter and more subtle, while still having a green undertone (passive).

Are you looking for the perfect dark gray for your cabinets, walls, or exterior? You’ve come to the right blog! Today we’re exploring the DARK side of things with Sherwin William’s most popular charcoal paint colors. But before we start, we need to have a little chat (as usual).

DARK GRAY PAINT COLORS & UNDERTONES

When it comes to gray, there will always be undertones (no matter HOW much you wish otherwise).

Warm grays can have either violet or green undertones whereas cool grays can have BLUE, violet or green (often a blend). If you want to learn MORE, I highly suggest you READ THIS.

Painted fireplace, beige tile, Repose Gray, Dovetail. Kylie M Interiors Edesign, diy decorating and design, client photo

And while these undertones are often passive in the lighter end of things, by the time we hit the dark side, they don’t hide as well. This means that there are often FEWER great ‘neutral’ looking options to choose from if you’re one of those who wants to see as little undertone as humanly possible.

Remember, you can’t avoid undertones entirely so you need to pick the one that best suits the finishes in your home!

So, now that we’ve got that awkward little chat out of the way, let’s jump in!

BTW, You’ll find that ALL of these colors have LRV’s that are lower than 30. Not sure what LRV is? It could save your PAINT LOVIN’ LIFE – read all about it HERE.

1. SHERWIN WILLIAMS DOVETAIL SW 7018

WARM GRAY – MILD VIOLET, RARELY GREEN

2. SHERWIN WILLIAMS CLASSIC FRENCH GRAY SW 0077

GRAY – PASSIVE GREEN UNDERTONE

If you ask ME, a color that’s called ‘Classic French Gray‘ should have a violet undertone, don’t you think? Or is it just me making some weird mental connection with something from my childhood? Anyway. Sherwin Williams Classic French Gray has a very subtle green undertone (winking slightly at green-blue in some lights). However, it’s so passive that I consider it to be one of the MOST NEUTRAL dark gray paint colors, with the knowledge that all grays really do have undertones.

GRAY – BLUE-GREEN UNDERTONE

If you’re a lover of the DARK end of things, welcome to the club. Not only do I have the STUNNING Urbane Bronze in my home, but I also have Roycroft Pewter – and NOT just on the inside, but on the OUTSIDE TOO!

AFTER, with a little KLC, Roycroft Pewter plays into the blue-green hues in the K2 slate stone and gives our home much more presence…

Roycroft Pewter has a BIT more undertone than the average dark gray but doesn’t QUITE step into the colorful end of things. While it caters to a blue undertone, it dips its pedicured toes into green quite nicely. With an LRV of 13, Roycroft Pewter is definitely on the edge of the CONSIDERABLY dark side.

Samplize offers peel and stick paint samples that are more AFFORDABLE, EASIER and more ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY than traditional paint pots. 4. SHERWIN WILLIAMS GRIZZLE GRAY SW 7068

GRAY – STRONG GREEN UNDERTONE

Give me some Grizzle fo’ shizzle! Sorry, just channelling my inner gangster. Grizzle Gray has an LRV of 13 which means it has some decent meat on its bones, but won’t ever look blackish. And if you ask me, while Benjamin Moore Amherst Gray is known for its green undertone, Grizzle Gray puts it to SHAME with a more noticeable green and a slightly cooler approach.

WARM GRAY – MILD VIOLET, RARELY GREEN

I’m throwin’ down the gauntlet with THIS gray. However, even with its LRV of 17, Gauntlet Gray isn’t the darkest charcoal gray but it sure has some solid depth.

6. SHERWIN WILLIAMS WESTCHESTER GRAY SW 2849

STORMY DARK GRAY, MINIMAL UNDERTONE

When it comes to undertones, it’s hard to beat the subtle approach of Westchester Gray. That’s not to say it’s perfectly neutral, but it’s not as committed as some of the other dark paint colors on this page.

The sun blows this photo out a bit, but I appreciate any photos my E-design clients send in!

While Westchester Gray can look a tiny wink blue, a touch green, it’s fractional and best and given the right exposure, interior lighting, surroundings, it can slightly nod to the other cool undertones.

7. SHERWIN WILLIAMS PEPPERCORN SW 7674

DARK COOL GRAY, MINOR FLEXIBLE GREEN UNDERTONE

If you choose Peppercorn, you’re in for one WILD undertone ride. Not that it’s overpowering by any stretch, it’s just UNPREDICTABLE. Like the color above it in the fan deck, Grizzle Gray, Peppercorn has a green undertone. However, given the right situation, don’t be surprised to see that green fall back to be replaced by a touch o’ blue-violet hues!

In this next bathroom, you’ll see a sneak-peek of Peppercorn as a feature wall with Benjamin Moore Collingwood.

Peppercorn has an LRV of 10, so it definitely has depth, more so than many of the colors on this page. However, it’s not dark enough to wink at the black end of things. Once I get more photos from my E-Design clients showing this color, I’ll add them in. Until then…

8. SHERWIN WILLIAMS WEB GRAY

DARK COOL GRAY, FLEXIBLE BLUE UNDERTONE

I love Web Gray. Its LRV of 13 is a great way to make an impact on the kitchen island, doors or feature walls, but it’s not so dark that it weighs a space down. But when it comes to undertones, it’s darn sneaky! Sherwin Williams Web Gray, beige siding, cream trim. Kylie M INteriors. Sidelight kept white. Edesign, virtual paint colour services.

The Best Paint Colors for Your Front Door

Web Gray favors a blue undertone, no doubt about it. However, given the situation, it can lean either blue-violet or blue-green. For example, put it against a stronger violet undertone like Sherwin Williams Wall Street and you’ll REALLY see the green pop up in there. But then, place it next to the green of Grizzle Gray and it looks more blue-violet again. COMPARISON IS KEY.

London Fog: Is it taupe, greige, or warm gray? Let’s find out!

If you’ve been searching high and low for the PERFECT warm neutral, a color that’s VERSATILE and subtle, have I got the color for you…

Paint colour review, popular taupe or greige paint colour, Benjamin Moore London Fog. Kylie M Interiors Diy, online paint color consulting

In order to show you RELATEABLE & REAL homes, I ONLY use photos from my Online Color Consulting clients. This means I don’t always have the quality photos I need or the RIGHT photos, but DEFINITELY have some SUPER helpful info to help you on your way!

What type of paint color is London Fog? Is it greige, taupe, or warm gray?

London Fog is a TAUPE paint color. And while some taupes learn pretty hard into their violet undertones – not this one. While London Fog doesn’t flash an obvious green (which would make it a greige), it also doesn’t commit very hard to violet. This means it’s pretty darn flexible.

What’s the LRV of London Fog?

London Fog has an LRV of 57.23. This LRV makes London Fog a LIGHT depth paint color, but it’s definitely on the HEAVIER side of this range. If you have a dark room, this depth of taupe can make the walls look a bit muddy and drab. However, if you have a bright room, this added depth will help it hold strong against bright light, not washing out as much as lighter colors will.

Not sure what LRV is? It could save your paint lovin’ life – read all about it HERE.

What are the undertones of London Fog?

As you learned earlier, London Fog has a VERY subtle violet undertone, making it a taupe. Could it look a bit violet-pink? Well, being a warm neutral in this range, it will have a bit of red/pink in its background, but it really doesn’t show up to the party. I suppose if you’re sensitive to this undertone you might disagree, but generally, London Fog’s undertones are very subtle.

How should I sample this color on my walls?

Like with every paint color, I highly recommend using SAMPLIZE. Samplize is a peel & stick paint sample that you can easily move around your room for over HALF THE COST of traditional sample pots – and they deliver right to your front door!

Is London Fog a good color for the exterior of my home?

London Fog can be an excellent choice for the exterior, as long as it suits your finishes. Luckily, it’s the type of color that often relates well to many of the common stone facades.

Does Sherwin Williams have a color similar to London Fog?

Every paint color has its own personality and nuances – there will be NO perfect match. But you could check out a color with a similar approach, something like Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray or even Popular Gray.
